Want, Need, Wear, Read 12/10/09

I love this Christmas idea from OhDeeDoh. —The notion that you should only gift 4 things. Something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read.

Our kids have too much stuff. They need more basics, less filler. Expensive does not mean fantastic gift. This year we’re giving 4 meaningful gifts, all relevant, grounded, and simple. I just can’t stand the idea of buying stuff just for the sake of buying stuff. I’m tired of losing touch with the emotional depth of the season because of the crazed shopping just so the kids feel like they got to open lots of presents.

Sophia has so many toys that she doesn’t know what to play with. We recently dumped all of her toys into laundry baskets and now she does chores to earn them back. I was pleased to hear her report that she realized she had too much clutter in her room and liked only having a few toys in there. A good step in the right direction.
