Spring Song and Chirp! 12/24/09

My mother gave me my grandmother’s china years ago. While it is quite lovely, it’s not what I would have picked out on my own. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a treasured heirloom, but I felt a little pang of wanting to start my own set. So when my husband and I got married last year, I looked at the Lenox Chirp pattern at Field’s in Chicago longingly knowing there was no way in the world I could justify it. I have a full set of china for 12 and the Chirp pattern is pricey at about $1,200.00 for the same number of place settings.

BUT Target came out with a knockoff! It’s called Spring Song and is $59 for 4 place settings (16 pieces total). It’s nearly identical. So close, in fact, that it’s already being discontinued. I can’t imagine that Lenox didn’t have something to do with the brief appearance on Target shelves. Even the link to the product page on Target.com is dead while they usually leave those pages up long after the products are sold out.

This is one of those cases where it’s the graphic and colors I’m in love with, not the brand, so I’m perfectly happy with my Target plates. Lucky me, my wonderful husband lovingly went to 3 different stores to scrounge up the only 3 remaining sets left in our area so I could have my own set of 12.

Because he is sweet and awesome. Score! (On both counts.)

Yay! Lucky you! I fell in LOVE with Chirp around our wedding and there was NO way we could have afforded it.

But, I too bought the Spring Song set (2 sets) today and I'm soooo happy! Our Target has 5 boxes left and that's all that I can find in the Los Angeles area and I called EVERYWHERE!

Whew! Just in the nick of time! <3

I gotta ask because I just bought the 2 sets for a total of 8 place settings. I'm not familiar with owning China all too well — is it traditional to have 12?

Hi there,

You know, I do not know how many place settings is considered traditional. I'm hoping someday to have a big table full of friends and family and always wanted enough of the same pattern to do it.

Good job on finding the sets. I found one more at another Target and had a really hard time talking myself out of grabbing it while I still could!

I hope you enjoy many wonderful meals with loved ones on your cute new set of China!

I LOVE the Target dishes. I bought one set and am on the hunt for another, but I was wondering how your dishes are holding up. I have been taking special care of my dishes. We haven't even used them yet and I washed them by hand. I noticed tonight that one of my dishes has a big chip on the bottom and another is missing part of the pattern. Have you noticed anything similar?

I haven't actually used the dishes yet. What a bummer! Well, I'll be sure to be gentle. Hopefully that was just a fluke. Sorry to hear it.
