[...] Old lunch boxes: Spray paint white, add a bright red cross, and use for a homemade first aid kit. Keep a couple of them well-stocked, one for your car, one for home. Another use: paint it a bright color and make a road trip kit for the kids. One for each, filled with fun things to make the time pass. Check out my road trip tips from last summer.
Last year I made a game for my niece (7) and nephew (9) to play on a road trip. Put some small trinkets in a small bag. (A Crown Royal bag is perfect for this.) Trinkets can be small plastic farm animals, a rock, game pieces from a game you don't play anymore, etc. What they are is not important, but the more varied and unique, the better. To start the game, the first player pulls a piece from the bag and starts a story about the piece. When player 1 has begun spinning a good tale, they pass the bag to the next player, who selects a piece from the bag and continues the story with their selection. Even the driver can play.

My niece and nephew are great story tellers and this game was a big hit. We play it in restaurants, too, while waiting for our orders. The kids are quite adept at weaving our surroundings into their stories. We always have lots of laughs whenever we play. I am always on the lookout at garage sales and clearance aisles for a new trinket to add to the bag.

Hope you enjoy the road trip!

Oh my gosh - this is too funny! My brother will be 40 this year, so you probably went to school with him. I'd post his name here, but he probably wouldn't like that very much. :)

And yes, I was in band. I played the clarinet. My mind is drawing a blank on the bank teacher's name.....I can picture his face like it was yesterday though!

BTW - are you on Facebook?

SHUT UP!

I'll be 40 in October. I was there from about 1982-1984. So...Were you in band, per chance?

Oh my gosh - small world indeed! I went to Brandon Valley for junior high and high school. I'm pretty sure you're younger than me though....7th grade would have been 1986-87.

I would definitely love to meet you! :)

Yes - bike trails surrounding the entire city. I know there is a lot of construction though (and grumbling from residents). Downtown is really being revitalized....newest thing is the sculpture walk. I'm not sure how long you plan on staying (if at all) but it's really been a hit with tourists (and locals). And I can't forget the Falls. Water level is very high right now so it's an awesome sight!

Small world!!

I lived in Sioux Falls for a couple of years when I was a kid. I went to Brandon Valley Jr. High. How funny!

If we get close to town at a reasonable time, I'll drop a note and maybe we can meet for a coffee or iced tea!

Do they still have all those wonderful bicycle trails? I still have a scar on my shin from racing by oldest brother to the statue of David downtown and crashing into a tree at a sharp corner.

Alana, I don't have any suggestions for you (as my kids are 18 & 13) but I wanted to let you know that you'll more than likely pass through the city where I live! I'm from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and if you're taking I-90 from Mitchell east to Okoboji, you'll pass right through my city. I hope you enjoy South Dakota! There are some boring stretches of land from Wall east to Chamberlain, so hopefully your kids will nap during that time. :)
