Around the house, 1 week before Christmas 12/18/11

Feeling kind of festive, enjoying a relaxed Sunday morning, just wandered around and took some shots of my favorite scenes from around the house. Sophia is at her dad's house and we miss her. I'll add more pics with her in them when she gets back. Autumn is down in Texas doing what working college freshmen do. We miss her, too. This is an automaton music box my Aunt Patty gave me several years ago for Christmas. As the music plays, all the characters dance around and play their musical instruments. When...

Give the gift of a peaceful retreat 12/01/11

Over at Making it Lovely, Nicole has been helping a neighbor make over their master bedroom. It always goes this way, doesn't it? We fuss over the common areas, the childrens' rooms, even the pet's beds before we make a peaceful and beautiful place to rest at the end of the day. photo: makingitlovely.com Using only a $1500 budget and amending with items the homeowner already had, they created a clean, fresh, beautiful space that wasn't so feminine that a husband wouldn't feel like the space didn't co...

Gift ideas from Bluebird Goods 11/28/11

Everyone has folks on their list who are hard to shop for. I've rounded up a few of my favorite gift items from my shop in hopes that they may provide a little inspiration. From left to right, starting at the top: Vintage-style enamel thermometers: Birds, chickens, butterflies, angels...I've yet to meet a woman who doesn't love one of these things. And what a pretty touch to her garden or just outside a window to cheer up a gray winter morning. The ultimate gardener's friend...

Christmas door ideas 11/26/11

This is our second year in our classic Chicago bungalow. It has beautiful Arts and Crafts era details, so I don't want to overwhelm it with decorations. This year I'm keeping it clean and classic. White twinkle lights and lots of greenery. The space I'd like to really do right is the front entryway. I've been Pinning all sorts of ideas and I think I've decided to do natural pine boughs (I love the loose drippiness) and a pine wreath with a loosely wrapped ribbon instead of the traditional bow. Then I'll hit up area t...

Elf on the Shelf ideas 11/14/11

Holiday contest for ideas! I recently picked up a vintage Elf to start the "Elf on the Shelf" tradition with my kids. I've seen a few posts from around the web with tons of cute ideas for how to place him around the house. I think Dave and I will have as much fun cooking up ideas for where to place him as the kids will when they discover his nightly activities each morning. This is the cute little guy I picked up at my favorite antique mall for $6. Love that he's teal and green. He fits r...

Looking back at 2009 12/20/09

Just about 1 year ago I was barely pregnant with our sweet little baby Will. Autumn was here and heard me squeal with happiness when I saw the positive result on the test stick, so she was the first one to find out. We called Dave, who was at his grandparents' home downstate. It's been a year of wide contrasts. Some true heartbreak offset by the miracle of a new baby. I've learned how deep and special friendship can be, that I have more love and patience than I ever knew as a mother, and that truly knowing who ...

Want, Need, Wear, Read 12/10/09

I love this Christmas idea from OhDeeDoh. —The notion that you should only gift 4 things. Something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. Our kids have too much stuff. They need more basics, less filler. Expensive does not mean fantastic gift. This year we're giving 4 meaningful gifts, all relevant, grounded, and simple. I just can't stand the idea of buying stuff just for the sake of buying stuff. I'm tired of losing touch with the emotional depth of the season because of the...
