Easy project: how to make a folding shopping cart liner with leftover materials 01/09/12

I was inspired last week by some folding shopping cart liners I saw online and decided it would be fun to try one myself. I love cruising flea markets on summer mornings and I usually have a folding shopping cart with me, but I hate that smaller items fall through the large holes in the frame. I've seen folks with all sorts of inserts and liners, but nothing cute. Functional stuff has to be cute for me. I prefer it that way. It falls under my "why live a boring life?" policy. So I got hold of a used coffe...

Creative ideas for using burlap 01/05/12

Has anyone else noticed how much burlap there is out there these days? I've admired how people are using it paired with reproduction and orginal graphics, made to look like an old French country feed sack. Lots of folks are doing gorgeous things with upcycled coffee & potato sacks with all kinds of colorful printing. From the most vibrant to the most plain, I think it all looks wonderful. When such a rugged material is paired with sweet fabrics, it only enhances the pretty factor. For quick projects, it...

Blog Love: Chalk cloth table topper project 11/23/11

Oh, I was on a roll! Until some vicious bug took me down over the weekend. I've abandoned my sweet little blog for vats of Pepto and quality time on the daybed. Ugh. So I'm totally pulling a cheater cheater pumpkin eater blog post by sharing this bit of brilliance spotted over at Oilcloth Addict (in the name of Blog Love). It's one of those "Ahh! So easy! So smart! So cute! I'm so doing this!" things. Kelly has taken oilcloth faced with a chalkboard finish and trimmed it so that it's an exact fit to h...

Will, Dave, the flea, and me. 09/25/11

Will, Dave, and I loaded up and headed out to an area flea market this morning. I've been nursing a bug to not just sell new stuff in my shop, but to find cool vintage stuff to re-purpose and craft into some new little thing. Today my laser beam focus was on silver plate. I want to make an assortment of flattened and stamped spoons for the spring gardening boom over the winter. So Will and I got ready to go while Dave was in the shower. Will was feeling his Hemingway look today.   I brought home a h...

First try at quilting 07/23/11

My job is tech-heavy. My home is tech-savvy. I feel like I'm wired in 24 hours a day, so my next project is intentionally as low-fi as possible. I'm giving quilting a try to see if I enjoy it, hoping it'll be a quiet and peaceful activity instead of frustrating and difficult. Right  now it could go either way. For my first quilt I'm using a Moda Strawberry Fields charm pack cut up to make a Friendship Star pattern which will be appliqued to white cotton squares, then pieced together with my aunts and cousin...

Crafty: Galveston “vintage” transit scroll 09/22/10

I knew this route by heart as a kid. As a matter of fact, I had to look up the names of a couple of the streets because I just knew to turn left at the old Moody house, right at the big yellow mansion, another left by the Catholic school and so on. :) I've been inspired by the recent trend of displaying vintage transit scrolls in home decor, but wasn't moved by any of them because the routes didn't mean anything to me. Plus they sell for way out of my price range right now. Then I had an idea to create my own "b...

Make a Terrarium: Tuesday night crafty 05/11/10

This evening Fi and I put together a terrarium for our poor, homeless gnome. He's sheltered by a money tree and flanked with angel plants and live moss we culled from the front yard. We sprinkled some Assyllum seeds in the background, so hopefully we'll have a little flowered fairy setting when they come in. *NEW ON KITSCHY KITTEN Don't always make it to KitschyKitten.com?
