Halloween 2011

Sophia and I took Will out for his first round of trick-or-treating this afternoon. She’s been coaching him how how to say it for the past week or so, like the fantastic big sister she is. He toddled after her, climbing up stairs, announcing “tree a tree” and giving a polite “tee you” when the homeowners dropped a piece of candy in his little bucket.

He wasn't sure what to make of it all at first.

But he caught on with the guidance of his Halloween pro big sister.

Sophia designed both of our Jack-O-Lanterns. I love the pirate one.

When Dave got home he took the kids out for a second round, then a longer run with just Sophia so I could stay here and greet the trick-or-treaters. I made chicken pot pies for dinner, something I remember having as a kid quite a bit. They seemed like a good way to wrap up a chilly evening. Everyone snuggled up in the living room, costumes tucked away, watching some good Halloween TV and eating some warm fall comfort food.

Will, Dave, the flea, and me.

Will, Dave, and I loaded up and headed out to an area flea market this morning. I’ve been nursing a bug to not just sell new stuff in my shop, but to find cool vintage stuff to re-purpose and craft into some new little thing. Today my laser beam focus was on silver plate. I want to make an assortment of flattened and stamped spoons for the spring gardening boom over the winter.

So Will and I got ready to go while Dave was in the shower. Will was feeling his Hemingway look today.

I brought home a haul of silver plate odds and ends. It was all in a box that I snagged for $25 as an end-of-day deal.

Stay tuned…The spoons are headed for a violent demise.

Everything polished up so pretty! I’m happy about the day’s haul.

OH NO! Who will save the wee spoons? (Muahaha)
Dave asked if this can be his job. He’s very good at whacking things.

These will be smacked down and stamped with the names of common herbs.

This little guy models as “Parsley”. How do you do, Mr. Parsley? Lookin’ good!

Catching up

The summer is always a busy time for us. Chicago keeps us locked indoors for so long during the winter months, that it’s hard to get me to stay inside very long once things warm up.

Here are the broad strokes:

We went to Texas to visit family.

Sophia turned 10 and got her ears pierced.

Will turned 2.

We got the Yellowstone camper and have been fixing it up.

I got hit in my Subaru by a red-light runner.

And then have been on a mega-crafty-craftiness bender.

Will: 19 1/2 months

Baby Will and the Electric Toothbrush

This morning I was brushing my teeth when Dave walked into the bathroom with Will. He’s developed this new thing where he opens his mouth wide when he sees you eating or drinking, like a little begging baby bird. After seeing that I was enjoying a feast of toothbrush and toothpaste, Will started mooching, so I held the sonic brush up and let him see what it was all about.

Hilarity ensues.

Free ranging in the backyard

The mornings have been really nice lately, fairly cool and mild. Will and I have been spending them in the backyard, where we’ll allow the girls to free range while I have my coffee and check email. The past 2 mornings they’ve been pretty timid, but I’m guessing those days are behind them!
